Kamala Harris Featured on Vogue Cover Amidst Mixed Reactions
Vice President Kamala Harris has once again graced the cover of Vogue, this time as the magazine’s digital cover star for the October issue. The cover, photographed by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, marks Harris’ second appearance on the Vogue cover, and it presents a stark contrast to her previous feature.
In the latest issue, Harris is depicted in a mocha-hued suit designed by Gabriela Hearst, paired with a plum satin blouse. Seated elegantly on a baby blue chair, she exudes confidence and a relaxed demeanor, a significant departure from her first cover which sparked controversy due to her casual attire, including Chuck Taylor sneakers.
The new cover has been praised for its formal yet inviting aura, capturing Harris in a pose that evokes scenes of official meetings and international discussions. However, not all feedback has been positive. Some critics have pointed out the heavy airbrushing of Harris’ image, which has drawn criticism for altering her natural appearance.
The Vogue feature also includes a glowing profile of Harris, describing her as the “candidate for our times” and highlighting her ability to rally diverse support. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and several of Harris’ supporters were interviewed for the article, praising her leadership and appeal.
Despite the positive reception from many of her supporters, the cover has also faced criticism from some quarters. Nigerian-British photographer Misan Harriman expressed a desire for more opportunities to be given to talented Black women photographers, and Annie Leibovitz has faced scrutiny in the past for her representation of Black and Brown subjects.
