SAN ANTONIO, Texas – As the Houston Cougars make a push for the NCAA championship, head coach Kelvin Sampson draws strength from an unwavering family connection both on and off the court. With his son Kellen serving as an assistant coach and daughter Lauren as the director of external operations, the Sampson family is integral to the Cougars’ success, bolstered by the support of Kelvin’s wife, Karen.

After the Cougars advanced to the Final Four, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich praised the family, saying, “You built a program with grit, character and love.” The Sampsons’ journey began in Pembroke, North Carolina, where Kelvin and Karen first met in high school. Karen, a dedicated educator, holds her roots in the Lumbee tribe, which shapes their family’s cultural identity.

Kelvin Sampson shared his reflections on being Lumbee: “I started understanding racial equity…The family was our culture. The people had tremendous pride being Lumbee.” The couple married in 1979 and have since welcomed two children, Lauren and Kellen, who have taken active roles in the Cougars’ program.

As a former teacher, Karen has worked with Native American students across various schools and has been involved in numerous educational initiatives. In 2018, she joined the UNC Pembroke Board of Trustees, showcasing her commitment to education. In September 2024, her contributions culminated in the inauguration of the Karen L. and Kelvin Sampson Athletics Nutrition Station at UNC Pembroke.

The Sampson family’s close-knit dynamic resonates not only with Kelvin and Karen’s children but extends to the players they host at their home for dinners and film sessions. This tradition fosters strong bonds and supports the players both academically and personally.

The story of their resilience is particularly highlighted during challenging times. In 2008, Kelvin resigned from Indiana University amid NCAA violations, a period that tested the family’s fortitude. During this hiatus from college basketball, Karen’s unwavering support proved pivotal.

When Kelvin accepted the head coaching position at the University of Houston in 2014, the family faced an uphill battle. At that time, Houston hadn’t appeared in the NCAA Tournament for 22 years, and the conditions of the Hofheinz Pavilion were dismal. “There was an inordinate amount of rats – and rodents and birds,” recalled Lauren Sampson, who quickly took on significant responsibilities in basketball operations.

Through grit and determination, the Sampsons undertook a comprehensive renovation of the program. “It was about turning on the lights,” Lauren said, reflecting on the monumental task of revitalizing the program. Under their joint efforts and Kelvin’s coaching expertise, they transformed the Cougars into contenders, culminating with their third Final Four appearance.

“We knew it was going to be a major reclamation project; it was just way worse than I even imagined once we got in there,” Kelvin said. Throughout this journey, the Sampson family has exemplified the importance of unity and commitment, paving the way for a new era in Houston basketball.
