Lady Vols Gear Up for Crucial Rematch Against Vanderbilt

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers (22-8) advanced to the second round of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament with a decisive 77-37 victory over Texas A&M, setting up a rematch against in-state rival Vanderbilt (21-9) on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
The Lady Vols are looking for redemption after a narrow 71-70 loss to the Commodores on January 19, when a last-second tip-in by SEC Freshman of the Year Mikayla Blakes sealed the victory for Vanderbilt.
“It’s a big game for us,” said Lady Vols head coach Kellie Harper following the Texas A&M win. “They had our number the last game, so it’s going to be really important for us to get a quick reset.”
In that previous matchup, the Lady Vols struggled defensively, allowing 21 offensive rebounds and failing to control the game in key moments. During the contest, they were held to just five points in the second quarter, which contributed to an 11-point halftime deficit.
Blakes, who has shown remarkable skill throughout her freshman year, averages 23.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, making her a major focal point for Tennessee’s defense. Alongside her, teammate Brinae Alexander averages 20.8 points and 9.6 rebounds, further solidifying the Commodores’ offensive threat.
The stakes in this upcoming rematch are significant. While a win for Tennessee may not drastically improve their NCAA Tournament seed, a loss could jeopardize their position. The Lady Vols currently project to be a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, while Vanderbilt is considered a No. 8 seed.
A key to a Tennessee victory will be slowing down Blakes and Alexander, especially considering the firepower they showcased in the last encounter. If the Lady Vols succeed, they may face top-seeded South Carolina in the tournament quarterfinals.
The game will be broadcast on SEC Network and can also be streamed on the ESPN app with a TV provider login. With a chance to avenge a painful loss and advance further in the SEC Tournament, the Lady Vols are poised for a decisive clash with their rivals.
