Last-Minute Winner Sees Napoli Secure Victory Against Salernitana
Amidst heartbreak for Serie A‘s bottom side, Napoli managed to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory against Salernitana thanks to a last-minute goal by Amir Rrahmani. The reigning champions, Napoli, had been enduring a winless run of four matches, but Rrahmani’s stoppage-time strike ended their streak and lifted them up to sixth place in the league.
The match, which took place at the iconic Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, saw Napoli initially struggle to make progress towards Salernitana’s goal despite dominating possession in the first half. It was Salernitana who took the lead in the 29th minute, with Antonio Candreva unleashing a curling shot into the top right corner from 25 yards.
However, going a goal down seemed to spark Napoli into action. They began to find their footing and had their first decent efforts on goal after conceding. Just before halftime, Napoli was awarded a penalty after a VAR review, following a 50-50 challenge between Simeone and Fazio, and Matteo Politano calmly converted the spot-kick to equalize.
The second half saw Napoli maintain control of the game, but they struggled to make their possession count against a resilient Salernitana defense. As the match approached its conclusion, it looked as though it might end in a draw. However, in the dying moments, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had a great chance to secure the victory, but his shot was saved. Fortunately for Napoli, a free-kick was then poorly defended by Salernitana, allowing Rrahmani to poke home the winning goal to the delight of the home fans.
This victory could potentially be seen as a turning point for Napoli, as they’ve had a season filled with difficulties. Manager Walter Mazzarri will surely be relieved to see his team secure all three points, allowing them to climb the Serie A standings.
