Liberty Flames Basketball Victory Celebration

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Liberty Flames secured their first Conference USA championship on Saturday, defeating Jacksonville State 79-67 in a decisive game that marked a significant milestone for the program’s NCAA aspirations. The victory earned Liberty a spot in the NCAA Tournament, their first since 2018.

Liberty showcased their prowess with 12 three-pointers and shot over 60% from beyond the arc, effectively overcoming a delay caused by a roof leak at Propst Arena. The championship victory highlights the Flames’ strong season, culminating in their 28th win.

Under head coach Ritchie McKay, Liberty has reached the NCAA Tournament four times since 2019. ‘It’s like threading the eye of a needle in the dark,’ McKay said, reflecting on the challenges faced in a one-bid league. ‘We had to be nearly perfect to get here.’

The Flames controlled much of the game after a back-and-forth start, fueled by a 16-1 run in the first half that created a substantial lead. Kaden Metheny played a pivotal role, contributing 21 points and earning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player accolade.

Jacksonville State, led by Conference USA Player of the Year Jaron Pierre Jr., attempted to close the gap but were thwarted by Liberty’s defensive adjustments, particularly in the second half where Pierre struggled without scoring from the field.

In addition to Metheny, Colin Porter added 13 points and delivered nine assists, while Taelon Peter added 20 points without a single miss from the field during the game. Peter capped off the victory with an electrifying dunk in the final minute.

Liberty’s journey back to the NCAA Tournament marks a return to prominence for the program. The Flames are projected as a No. 12 seed in the East Region and may face fifth-seeded Oregon in the tournament.

‘This was a battle every night; it was rough,’ McKay said. ‘But I do think it prepares you well for what’s next.’
