Louis Rees-Zammit Transitions from Rugby to NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars
Former Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has embarked on a new chapter in his sports career, transitioning from the world of elite rugby to American football. Rees-Zammit, known for his tenure with Wales and Gloucester, is currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a practice-squad wide receiver. This move marks a significant shift for the athlete, who announced his intention to cross over to the NFL nine months ago, following his participation with the Welsh team in the Rugby World Cup.
The 23-year-old athlete’s passion for American football is longstanding, with a particular affinity for the sport developing over years. In an exclusive interview with The Times, Rees-Zammit recounted how his journey from being a fan of the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers to attending their games in Tottenham has inspired his transition. “I was just trying to ride a wave and play the game that I’ve loved since a young age,” he explained, reflecting on his move.
Rees-Zammit’s journey into the NFL began with the International Player Pathway (IPP) programme, initially placing him with the Kansas City Chiefs as a running back due to their robust roster at wide receiver. Although he participated in pre-season games, the stacked lineup left him exploring different roles. “All of that was to do with finding the right position for me,” he said of his Kansas City stint.
Following his time with the Chiefs, Rees-Zammit swiftly transitioned to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he aims to establish himself as a wide receiver. Jaguars’ head coach Doug Pederson encouraged Rees-Zammit to view this as a “learning year,” emphasizing the importance of readiness and the potential for elevation within the team.
Rees-Zammit expressed his commitment to mastering his new position, highlighting the mental aspects of adapting to the intricacies of American football. “It’s more of a mental game,” he noted, underlining the importance of timing and precision in collaboration with the quarterback.
During a recent NFL Foundation event, Rees-Zammit found himself alongside Prince William, showcasing the unique intersections of his new journey. As the Jaguars prepare for their London game, Rees-Zammit remains hopeful and determined, taking every opportunity to learn and grow in his new role.
