LOS ANGELES, California — Luis Malagón, the starting goalkeeper for Club América, will take the pitch this Thursday as Mexico faces Canada in a semifinal match of the Concacaf Nations League. The match will be held at SoFi Stadium, and Malagón is eager to showcase his skills on this international stage.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper’s journey to the top has been marked by determination. Emerging from the Tercera División with Real Zamora in 2014, he was instrumental in leading the team to a promotion to the Segunda División. His performance included outstanding saves, notably stopping two penalty shots in a critical semifinal match against Deportivo Las Varas.

“Thanks to God, everything came together,” Malagón stated after his team’s advancement. “All my teammates fought hard; despite the challenging scoreline, we pushed through.” Zamora progressed to the finals, ultimately achieving the coveted promotion but falling short against Pachuca with an 8-2 aggregate score.

Following his tenure at Zamora, Malagón transferred to Monarcas Morelia, where he honed his skills in the youth system and made his Liga MX debut in 2019. Over two seasons, he played 24 matches, leading to his recruitment by Necaxa in 2020. Malagón continued to excel, featuring in 72 games before joining América.

Since arriving at Club América, Malagón has played over 102 matches and has been pivotal in the team’s recent success, contributing to their tricampeonato. His consistency has made him a standout player in the squad coached by André Jardine.

Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre has announced Malagón as the starting goalkeeper for the semifinal against Canada. The stakes are high as the national team aims for a place in the finals of the Nations League, reinforcing the importance of Malagón’s role in this critical match.

“It’s an honor to represent Mexico, especially in an important game like this,” Malagón said. “We are ready, and I hope to contribute to our success.”

The anticipation for the match is building, with fans eager to see if Malagón can replicate his impressive club performances on an international stage.
