DALLAS, Texas — The Dallas Mavericks have signed forward Kai Jones to a two-way contract as they seek to strengthen their frontcourt amidst a series of injuries plaguing key players. This decision comes as Mavericks’ standout Anthony Davis, along with Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford, is set to be re-evaluated for injuries on March 6.

The three players have significantly impacted the team’s performance this season, but their absence has put pressure on the Mavericks to find temporary solutions for their frontcourt struggles. In recent games, the Mavericks have resorted to using Kessler Edwards and Olivier-Maxence Prosper as makeshift centers, alongside Moses Brown, who was signed to a 10-day contract. They opted to release Kylor Kelley to make room for Jones, who joins Brandon Williams and Edwards as the team’s two-way players.

Jones, a former first-round pick selected 19th overall by the New York Knicks in the 2021 NBA Draft, was traded to the Charlotte Hornets on draft night. His tenure in Charlotte lasted just two seasons, leading to his waiver in October 2023, prior to a brief period with the LA Clippers. During his time with the Clippers, Jones played in 28 games, averaging 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

Standing at 6-foot-11 and weighing 218 pounds, Jones is regarded as an elite athlete, though his development has been stymied by off-court challenges. He will now have the chance to contribute to a Mavericks squad that is experiencing a turbulent phase, having lost three of their last four games and currently holding a record of 32-29, placing them 10th in the Western Conference.

“We believe in Kai’s potential and athleticism,” said a Mavericks spokesperson. “This contract represents an opportunity for him to showcase his skills, especially with our team struggling for depth in the frontcourt.”

Kelley, who averaged 3.0 points and 2.6 rebounds in his eight games with the Mavericks, briefly made his mark with a double-double in his first career start against the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, the Mavericks fell short in that game, losing by 43 points. The upcoming weeks will test whether Jones can provide the necessary support as the Mavericks look to maintain their playoff positioning.

With the addition of Jones, a narrative emerges regarding potential confusion on the court, as Mavericks star Kyrie Irving also shares the first name Kai. However, the coaching staff is optimistic that clear communication will help alleviate any mix-ups.

As Dallas continues its push for a successful season, the organization remains hopeful that Jones’ added size and versatility will make a positive difference in their ongoing challenge.
