Melbourne Demons have received a significant setback as their captain, Max Gawn, has been ruled out for 2-3 weeks due to a foot injury sustained during Sunday’s game.

Gawn’s injury occurred in the second quarter of the match against West Coast when his foot collided with Harley Reid‘s leg as he attempted a kick.

Despite playing on initially, Gawn was eventually substituted out early in the last quarter of the game.

Following scans on Monday, the club confirmed that Gawn had suffered a ‘chip to the base of his right fibula’ but would not require surgery.

General manager of AFL performance Alan Richardson expressed disappointment over the news but praised Gawn’s professionalism and leadership.

Gawn’s absence will be keenly felt in upcoming crucial matches against Essendon, Fremantle, and potentially the Giants, as Melbourne aims to stay in touch with the top eight.
