MLB Bans Two Fans for Interfering with Mookie Betts During World Series
Major League Baseball has issued lifetime bans to two New York Yankees fans who interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts during Game 4 of the 2024 World Series at Yankee Stadium. The incident, which occurred on October 29, 2024, involved fans Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen grabbing Betts as he attempted to make a catch in foul territory.
In a letter obtained by The Associated Press, MLB stated that the fans’ actions ‘posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player’ and were ‘far over the line of acceptable fan behavior.’ The league banned the pair indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and events, warning that any future violations could result in arrest for trespassing.
The incident unfolded in the first inning when Betts leaped at the right-field wall to catch a pop fly by Yankees’ Gleyber Torres. Capobianco and Hansen, seated in the front row, grabbed Betts’ glove and bare hand, dislodging the ball. The Yankees condemned the behavior as ‘egregious and unacceptable,’ clarifying that the fans were not season ticket holders.
MLB has previously issued similar bans for fan misconduct, including a 2023 incident involving a fan approaching a player at Coors Field. Betts, known for his composure, downplayed the incident after the game but later expressed frustration during a televised interview, saying, ‘I would say f— you guys.’
The ban underscores MLB’s commitment to player safety and the integrity of the game. While the season ticket holder for the seats involved was not present and retains their privileges, the league’s decision sends a clear message: fan interference will not be tolerated.
