Mohamed Al Fayed Faces New Assault Allegations Posthumously
A new accusation of sexual assault has emerged against Mohamed Al Fayed, following an investigative report on the former Harrods owner. According to a report by the BBC, one woman claimed that the police nearly arrested him over her allegations just before his death in August 2023. More than 20 former female employees have come forward with claims of assault and physical violence at locations in London and Paris.
Five of these women have specifically alleged that they were raped by Mr. Al Fayed. At a press conference scheduled for Friday, the legal team involved in the investigation is expected to disclose more about the claims, focusing on the failure of the luxury department store to ensure a safe working environment for its employees.
One of the women, referred to as Melanie, came forward following the publication of the investigation, detailing a “sickening” sexual assault perpetrated by the Egyptian billionaire. Melanie reported working at Harrods prior to 2010 and encountered Mr. Al Fayed at work meetings and at his apartment. She described an instance when he placed his hands on her inappropriately, leaving her in complete shock. Despite reporting the incident to the police in 2023, Mr. Al Fayed passed away before he could be formally questioned.
Following these allegations, the current owners of Harrods expressed their consternation through a statement, declaring they were “utterly appalled” by the accusations. The department store has also created a platform on its website for former employees to report any misconduct. Mr. Al Fayed, originally from Alexandria, Egypt, moved to London in the 1960s, where he established a business empire, taking ownership of Harrods in 1985. He was frequently in the public eye, notably for his criticism of the British royal family following the death of his son Dodi Fayed with Diana, Princess of Wales in a tragic accident.
Previously, Mr. Al Fayed had been accused of harassment and sexual misconduct towards several women. However, a 2015 investigation by the police did not result in charges. In July 2023, the BBC reported that Harrods began settling claims of sexual abuse under Mr. Al Fayed’s ownership. A woman, anonymized as Rachel, recounted an assault that occurred after a late shift, further highlighting the alleged culture of abuse during his time at the company.
An official statement from Harrods denounced the abuses, emphasizing the profound changes the organization has undergone since Mr. Al Fayed’s tenure. They have expressed commitment to resolving historical claims swiftly and justly, prioritizing the welfare of their employees today and ensuring such behavior is never repeated.
