NBA Trade Deadline Looms as Teams Eye Major Moves
NEW YORK — With the 2025 NBA trade deadline just one week away, teams across the league are weighing potential moves that could reshape the playoff landscape. While no blockbuster trades have materialized yet, several teams are reportedly in active discussions, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and a Western Conference contender exploring deals for disgruntled stars.
The Cavaliers, currently holding a strong position in the Eastern Conference, are open to trade talks involving their star guard, according to league sources. Meanwhile, another team is in “active conversations” with multiple franchises to move a high-profile player who has expressed dissatisfaction with his current situation.
As the Feb. 6 deadline approaches, teams are closely monitoring the standings and evaluating how potential trades could impact their playoff aspirations. The Oklahoma City Thunder, for instance, have thrived with center Isaiah Hartenstein in the lineup, boasting a 23-2 record when he plays. However, injuries to key players like Chet Holmgren have exposed vulnerabilities in their roster.
In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics have struggled recently, dropping to 13-11 since Dec. 7. Despite their challenges, the Celtics remain a top contender, ranking eighth in offense and fourth in defense during that stretch. “It’s hard to get too concerned about a team that has stayed consistently near the top of the standings,” said ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.
Out West, the Houston Rockets have emerged as a surprise contender, winning 10 of their last 12 games, including victories over the Cavaliers and Celtics. Second-year forward Amen Thompson has been a key contributor, scoring 20-plus points in three of his past six games.
As the deadline nears, all eyes are on potential league-shifting moves. “You do that, it reminds you that there’s greatness still within you,” said Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson after a standout performance. Whether teams make bold moves or stand pat, the next week promises to be a pivotal moment in the 2025 NBA season.
