New Zealand Edges West Indies by Nine Runs in T20I Thriller
Nelson, New Zealand – New Zealand defeated the West Indies by nine runs in the third T20I on Nov. 9, 2025, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. New Zealand scored 177 runs while the West Indies managed 168, falling just short in a dramatic chase.
New Zealand opened the batting, with Devon Conway leading the charge, scoring 56 runs off 34 balls. Daryl Mitchell contributed 41 runs from 24 balls. Despite a few run-outs and breakthroughs by West Indies bowlers Jason Holder and Matthew Forde, New Zealand set a challenging target.
The match turned into a nail-biter as the West Indies struggled initially, finding themselves at 88 for 8 in the 13th over. However, a remarkable partnership between Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer gave the visitors hope. The duo put together a stunning 78 runs for the ninth wicket off just 39 balls, reducing the target to a manageable 13 runs from the last seven balls.
As the game reached its climax, New Zealand’s bowlers remained composed. Kyle Jamieson made crucial strikes, dismissing Shepherd when the West Indies needed just 12 runs in the final over. He had previously defended a similar situation in the last match, and once again, he stepped up under pressure.
The West Indies had moments of brilliance during their innings, with Shepherd scoring 49 runs and Springer adding 39 runs. However, it was not enough to secure a victory. New Zealand bowlers Ish Sodhi and Duffy were particularly effective, taking 3 wickets each to restrict the batting side.
The match showcased intense moments, including spectacular catches and big hits, particularly from Shepherd, who hit a huge six off Duffy that traveled 103 meters. Ultimately, the combination of tight bowling and smart fielding tactics by New Zealand secured their early series lead as they look to clinch the series in the upcoming matches.
