Nicaragua Faces Panama in Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Panamá City, Panama – The final match of Group D in the World Cup qualifying round is set for June 10, as Nicaragua takes on Panama at the Rommel Fernández Stadium. Nicaragua’s head coach, Marco Antonio Figueroa, emphasized the importance of the game during a recent press conference. He labeled the Panamanian press as ‘overconfident’ but stated that his team approaches the match with humility and respect.
Figueroa highlighted comments by Panamanian player Aníbal Godoy, referring to his belief that humility is crucial in football. “The matches must be played, and respect must prevail among all teams,” he said. The Nicaraguan squad arrives fresh off a 1-0 victory against Guyana, which secured their place in the final round of qualifying.
“In three years, Nicaragua has progressed more than other teams. We believe we are on par with several other national squads,” Figueroa added. Current standings show Nicaragua leading Group D with nine points and a goal difference of +8, while Panama sits second with +6.
On the Panamanian side, head coach Thomas Christiansen stated his team will strive for victory against Nicaragua. Christiansen noted that the match presents an opportunity to give playing time to various athletes and build confidence ahead of the final qualifying phase in September.
Central to these preparations is forward Eduardo Guerrero, who has not seen consistent playing time with his club in Ukraine. Christiansen expressed that ensuring Guerrero’s readiness is important for the overall team dynamic. Also available for the match is midfielder Andrés Andrade, who recently trained with the team after a brief rest period.
Defender Michael Amir Murillo echoed Christiansen’s sentiments, saying they have prepared thoroughly for this contest. “We want to finish this round on a high note,” he stated, recognizing the intensity that qualifying matches demand. Murillo acknowledged the fans’ support, emphasizing how crucial it is for the players to perform well at home.
The match between Panama and Nicaragua is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. local time. With both teams eager to clinch the top spot in the group, anticipation builds for this decisive encounter.
