Oklahoma’s Jayden Gibson Leaves Program Amid Injury Struggles

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer part of the Sooners football program, coach Brent Venables confirmed during a weekly SEC teleconference. “Jayden’s no longer with the team,” Venables said but did not provide additional details on the situation.
Gibson’s name was still on the University of Oklahoma’s athletic website’s roster before the teleconference but has since been removed. The wide receiver thanked the Sooners in a response on X, a social media platform, acknowledging his departure.
In 2024, Gibson missed the entire season due to a knee injury and did not play in any of Oklahoma’s first six games of the 2025 season. Earlier this year, Venables had expressed optimism about Gibson’s recovery despite a minor setback. “Jayden was working some routes on air and might have had a small setback,” he noted in March.
Gibson had a productive season in 2023, catching 14 passes for 375 yards and five touchdowns during his sophomore year. He caught a touchdown in each of Oklahoma’s final three regular-season games and started in the Alamo Bowl, a 35-32 loss to Arizona. In his freshman year, he recorded one catch for 12 yards while primarily contributing on special teams.
The 6-foot-5, Florida native was a highly touted 4-star recruit coming out of high school, choosing Oklahoma over several major programs, including Auburn and Florida State. The Sooners are currently managing without Gibson as they prepare to face South Carolina on Saturday, following a 23-6 loss to Texas in the Red River Rivalry.
Oklahoma’s wide receiver corps has thrived this season, with Arkansas transfer Isaiah Sategna leading the team with 420 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Jaren Kanak and receiver Deion Burks have also posted impressive numbers with 348 and 339 yards, respectively.
