The world of swimming is mourning the loss of Olympic champion David Wilkie, who passed away at the age of 70. His legacy in British swimming is remembered fondly by fans and athletes alike.

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1954 to Scottish parents, Wilkie was a standout athlete from an early age. His first taste of success came at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, where he won a bronze representing Scotland.

Wilkie went on to achieve greatness on the world stage, clinching three world titles and multiple Olympic medals. His crowning moment came at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he stunned the world by shattering the world record in the 200m breaststroke by over three seconds, earning gold for Great Britain.

Following his retirement from competitive swimming at just 22, Wilkie was honored with an MBE in 1977 for his contributions to the sport. He seamlessly transitioned into a successful businessman, showcasing his versatility both in and out of the pool.

In a statement released by his family, Wilkie’s son, Adam Wilkie, paid tribute to his father’s remarkable character, highlighting his love for life, kindness, and infectious sense of humor. Wilkie is survived by his wife, Helen, and his children, Natasha and Adam.
