Oscar Piastri Takes Pole for 2025 Spanish Grand Prix in Dramatic Qualifying

BARCELONA, Spain — McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will start on pole position at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix after an impressive qualifying performance on Saturday. Piastri secured the top spot with a lap time of 1:11.546, narrowly beating his teammate Lando Norris, who finished in second place.
Piastri now leads Norris by three points in the World Drivers’ Championship standings after eight races this season. The second row for the race will feature reigning champion Max Verstappen and George Russell, both of whom recorded identical lap times, placing Verstappen ahead due to timing regulations.
Piastri expressed satisfaction with his performance, saying, “I’m very happy. Our team found some pace overnight, and today the car felt amazing.”
Meanwhile, Lando Norris reflected on his qualifying run, highlighting a “cheeky” tow he received from Piastri during the event. Norris explained that it was coincidental, and he wished he could have capitalized on it more effectively.
Max Verstappen, who qualified third, mentioned the gap to the McLarens was consistent throughout the session, stating, “It’s fun. Around here, it’s about squeezing everything out of the car.” The Dutch driver hopes tomorrow’s long run to Turn 1 will be his opportunity to make up position.
In a significant development, Aston Martin announced that Lance Stroll will not compete today due to “pain in his hand and wrist” linked to a previous surgical procedure. Stroll, who has been struggling for weeks, will undergo further treatment before returning to racing.
Stroll qualified 14th, while teammate Fernando Alonso will start 10th. Alonso, aiming to earn his first points of the season in front of a home crowd, stated, “I’m eager to score some points here after a difficult start to the year.”
As the excitement builds for the race, questions remain about whether anyone can challenge the McLaren duo. Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth, his best performance of the season, trailing his fellow drivers closely after a frustrating start to the year.
With the race set to begin at 9 a.m. ET, fans are eager to see how the dynamics will unfold on this historic circuit, known for its challenging corners and physical demands on drivers.
