Ben Johnson Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator

The New England Patriots have completed a virtual interview with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for their head-coaching vacancy, the team announced Friday. Johnson, widely regarded as one of the top offensive minds in the NFL, is a leading candidate to replace Jerod Mayo, who was fired after one season.

Johnson’s interview, conducted via videoconference due to NFL rules, lasted three hours. The Patriots are reportedly impressed with his offensive acumen and his ability to transform the Lions’ offense into one of the league’s most potent units. Under Johnson’s leadership, quarterback Jared Goff has revitalized his career, and the Lions secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC this season.

“As good as there is as a coach,” said a former colleague of Johnson. “Demanding. Hard to work for. Smart as [expletive].” Johnson’s reputation as a meticulous and innovative play-caller has made him a sought-after candidate, but questions remain about his readiness to handle the broader responsibilities of a head coach.

The Patriots’ interest in Johnson is fueled in part by the presence of 22-year-old quarterback Drake Maye, whom the team views as a cornerstone of its future. Johnson’s ability to develop Maye could be a deciding factor in the hiring process. However, the Patriots face competition for Johnson’s services, as he has also interviewed with the Chicago Bears.

New England must also weigh the timing of their decision. Mike Vrabel, another top candidate, is receiving interest from other teams and could be hired elsewhere if the Patriots delay. Meanwhile, Johnson cannot formally accept a position or conduct in-person interviews until the Lions’ playoff run concludes, potentially forcing the Patriots to wait weeks before finalizing their decision.

The Patriots have interviewed several candidates, including Vrabel, Pep Hamilton, and Byron Leftwich, as they seek to rebuild after a disappointing season. The team’s next head coach will inherit a roster in transition and the challenge of restoring the franchise to its former glory.
