Paul Skenes and Colton Cowser Win 2024 MLB Rookie of the Year Awards
The 2024 MLB Rookie of the Year Awards have been announced, with Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates taking home the honor in the National League and Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles winning in the American League.
In the National League, Paul Skenes had a standout rookie season, posting a 1.96 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over 23 starts. He struck out 170 batters in 133 innings, earning him a spot as a Cy Young finalist as well. Skenes beat out strong competition from Jackson Merrill of the San Diego Padres and Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers.
In the American League, Colton Cowser emerged as the winner despite a field of strong contenders from the AL East. Cowser, the former No. 5 overall pick, hit .242 with 24 home runs and a .768 OPS, contributing significantly to the Orioles. He outpaced Luis Gil and Austin Wells, both of the New York Yankees, who also had impressive rookie seasons.
Luis Gil was a key player for the Yankees, especially during Gerrit Cole‘s early-season absence, with a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts and 171 strikeouts. However, his performance was marred by a brief IL stint due to a back injury. Austin Wells also had a notable season, though a severe slump in September likely impacted his chances for the award.
