Payton Turner Signs with Cowboys After Injury-Plagued Saints Career

IRVINE, Calif. — Payton Turner, the former defensive end for the New Orleans Saints, has signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys after struggling with injuries during his tenure with New Orleans.
Turner, selected by the Saints as the 28th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Houston, faced significant setbacks throughout his four seasons. He participated in just 31 of a possible 68 games during that time, including only 16 in the 2023 season.
A shoulder injury hampered his rookie year, while various ailments limited him to only eight games in 2022. In 2023, Turner suffered a turf toe injury that sidelined him for nearly the entire season, making it difficult for him to establish himself as a consistent contributor.
Throughout his Saints career, Turner recorded five sacks and 11 tackles for loss, leaving many wondering what could have been had he remained healthy.
“I believe in Payton’s potential and skillset. Unfortunately, injuries held him back, and we wish him the best in this next chapter,” said Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
The 2024 training camp at the University of California, Irvine represents a fresh start for Turner as he looks to revitalize his football career with the Cowboys. Dallas is banking on Turner to help strengthen its defensive line after losing several key players to free agency.
“I’m excited for this opportunity,” Turner stated shortly after the signing. “Dallas has a tradition of strong defenses, and I can’t wait to contribute and prove myself on the field.”
Turner’s move highlights the ongoing changes within NFL rosters as teams assess talent and depth ahead of the upcoming season. For the Cowboys, securing a player with Turner’s draft pedigree could pay dividends if he can overcome his injury history.
