Phoenix Mercury Waive Forward Amy Atwell Amid Offseason Moves

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Phoenix Mercury announced they have waived forward Amy Atwell, according to the WNBA transactions page. This move comes during an eventful offseason for the team as they aim to revamp their roster for the upcoming 2025 season.
The Mercury have made significant acquisitions, securing star players such as Satou Sabally and NaLyssa Smith. However, the team also faces challenges, including the loss of Brittney Griner in free agency and ongoing speculation regarding the potential retirement of veteran star Diana Taurasi. Despite these changes, Phoenix remains determined to field a competitive team.
Atwell, who is 26 years old, was initially expected to contribute to the Mercury’s depth. However, after a brief stint with the team, the organization opted for a different direction. Having only played a total of 10 WNBA games in her career, her opportunities have been limited.
Atwell was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks as the 27th overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft. Despite earning a spot on the roster, she played in just four games with the Sparks, averaging 8.0 minutes per game before being waived. She did not step onto the court again until joining the Mercury ahead of the 2024 season.
During her time with the Mercury, Atwell played six games, where she averaged 2.5 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. Although she seemed poised for a potential spot on the 2025 roster, the decision to release her suggests the team is looking to fill different needs.
While Atwell’s future remains uncertain, she still holds potential that could attract interest from other WNBA teams before the 2025 season begins. The Mercury, bolstered by new talent, have a vision to contend for the championship in a highly competitive league.
As the offseason progresses, the Mercury and their management will continue to assess and bolster their roster, looking for opportunities to enhance depth around their stars. Fans can expect further developments as the team prepares for what lies ahead.
