Pro Kabaddi League Season 11: A Decade of Sporting Evolution and Player Upliftment
The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) is set to commence its eleventh season with a renewed commitment to elevating the sport within India. Speaking in Hyderabad, ahead of the kickoff on Friday, PKL Commissioner Anupam Goswami highlighted the significance of the league in establishing kabaddi as a world-class sport. Goswami noted, “The best part of PKL is that all those who feature in the League walk across the country proudly saying that they are kabaddi players and with a sense of pride.”
Amidst a gathering of captains from all 12 franchise teams, Goswami expressed confidence in the PKL’s ability to foster a strong connection between the sport and its vast fan base. He remarked, “The whole objective is not to only produce superstar players but also super fans,” emphasizing the league’s goal of evolving through fan engagement.
Highlighting the growth of the league, Goswami pointed to players like Bengaluru Bulls captain Pardeep Narwal and Telugu Titans skipper Pawan Sehrawat as testament to the opportunities created by PKL. He stated, “Look, what PKL has done to players like them. I remember them coming into the league when they were very young and yet to make a mark.”
The financial evolution of the league has also been noteworthy, with Goswami stating that the player purse has increased from Rs 60 lakhs in the first season to Rs 5.5 crores currently. He added, “The middle level player is getting about Rs 8 lakhs, which is a pretty good amount.”
Reflecting on whether the PKL season spanning three months is too long, Goswami assured that the format, which includes 22 matches per team, has been well received by both players and stakeholders. He highlighted the fitness levels and mental strength of the players, indicating that these aspects have improved over the years.
Pawan Sehrawat, an Arjuna awardee, expressed how the PKL has transformed not only his career but also his identity and financial status. “When we started playing, getting a job was our priority. But, not any more,” said Pawan.
Pardeep Narwal, known as the raider with the highest points in PKL history, emphasized the professionalism with which the league is managed. “Whatever we achieved is part of the process thanks to the very professional way PKL is being organised,” he commented.
The upcoming season promises thrilling performances from players like Sachin Tanwar, who joins Tamil Thalaivas for Rs 2.15 crores, and Guman Singh, who signed with Gujarat Giants for Rs 1.97 crores. The league also proudly showcases Maninder Singh, captain of Bengal Warriors, who believes kabaddi’s popularity may rival cricket in the future.
The PKL Season 11, starting on October 18, will unfold in cities such as Hyderabad, Noida, and Pune, and will be available for viewing on Star Sports Network and Disney+Hotstar.
