Riot Games Unveils ‘Riftbound,’ a New League of Legends Trading Card Game

LOS ANGELES, CA — Riot Games has officially announced that its highly anticipated trading card game, previously referred to as Project K, will now be called Riftbound. The name change was revealed in a video shared on social media on March 31, 2025.
Set in the expansive universes of League of Legends and Arcane, Riftbound aims to introduce the strategic gameplay of the League of Legends world to tabletop enthusiasts. The game is scheduled to launch with its first set titled Origins, which boasts over 300 unique cards, including Unit, Spell, and Legend cards featuring popular characters like Jinx, Viktor, Lee Sin, and Yasuo.
“We heard player feedback on the design of cards and went back to the drawing board to create more original art for the TCG,” said Dave Guskin, game director of Riftbound. Executive Producer Chengran Chai added, “This commitment to our community has resulted in a design that players are excited about.”
Riftbound offers various gameplay formats, including one-on-one matches, 2v2 battles, and free-for-all rounds. The inaugural Origins set will include traditional cards as well as select Legend cards that come in secret rare versions featuring unique illustrations, appealing to both collectors and competitive players.
Additionally, a Proving Grounds collection, designed specifically for newcomers to trading card games, will also be available. The game is anticipated to launch in China during the summer of 2025, followed by releases in multiple English-speaking countries later that year, with some regions expecting the game in October 2025.
The development and distribution of Riftbound are supported by Riot’s partnership with UVS Games, a company with over 17 years of experience in the tabletop gaming sector. “We’re excited to ensure that Riftbound will be available in local game stores,” a representative from UVS Games stated.
Riot Games has indicated that Riftbound will be featured at various upcoming events, allowing players to experience the game firsthand before its complete rollout. Despite the excitement, some players from the digital card game Legends of Runeterra have expressed concerns regarding Riot’s focus on Riftbound potentially detracting from the digital title’s support.
“Imagine if this game had an online counterpart, and maybe call it Legends of Runeterra? That would be sick,” one player remarked, while another lamented, “Legends of Runeterra died for this.”
The growing anticipation for Riftbound reflects a significant shift in the League of Legends franchise, blending the digital and physical gaming spaces. Fans are encouraged to stay updated through the game’s social media channels for the latest developments.
