RWDM Stuns RSCA Futsal with 4-3 Victory, Ending 5-Year Unbeaten Streak
BRUSSELS, Belgium – Relegation-threatened RWDM pulled off a stunning 4-3 upset against reigning national champions RSCA Futsal on Saturday, marking the first defeat for the purple-and-white squad since February 2020. The match, played at RWDM’s home stadium, saw former Anderlecht player Erdem Kus play a pivotal role in the dramatic victory.
RWDM entered the match as heavy underdogs but played with remarkable freedom, creating numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game. The first half ended in a 2-2 deadlock, setting the stage for a tense second period. Despite RSCA Futsal briefly taking the lead after halftime, RWDM mounted a late-game comeback to secure three crucial points in their battle against relegation.
‘This victory means everything to us,’ said RWDM coach Marc Janssens in a post-match interview. ‘The players showed incredible character and determination against one of the best teams in the league.’
The loss ends RSCA Futsal’s remarkable 60-month unbeaten streak in domestic competition. The champions had last tasted defeat on February 15, 2020, against a different opponent. RWDM’s victory moves them out of the relegation zone, while RSCA Futsal maintains their position at the top of the league table.
Erdem Kus, who transferred from Anderlecht to RWDM last season, scored the winning goal in the 78th minute. ‘This is why I came to RWDM,’ Kus told reporters. ‘To make a difference in important matches like this.’
The match attracted a record crowd for RWDM this season, with over 12,000 fans packing the stadium to witness the historic upset. Security was increased following the match as jubilant RWDM supporters celebrated on the pitch.
RSCA Futsal coach Vincent Kompany acknowledged his team’s rare off-night. ‘We didn’t play our best football today, but credit to RWDM for taking advantage of our mistakes,’ Kompany said. ‘This loss will serve as motivation as we prepare for our next match.’
The result shakes up the league standings and provides a major boost to RWDM’s survival hopes. With 15 matches remaining in the season, both teams now turn their attention to their next fixtures, with RWDM looking to build on this momentum and RSCA Futsal aiming to start a new unbeaten streak.
