Sacramento Kings Consider Trades as Portland Blazers Seek Shooters
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As the NBA trade season heats up, the Sacramento Kings find themselves in a precarious position. The team has struggled to remain competitive, making the playoffs just once in the last 19 years. That lone appearance came two seasons ago when they were eliminated in the first round.
With ongoing discussions about reshaping their roster, the Kings may face a decision between another lengthy rebuild or making significant trades. Observers are particularly focused on the Portland Trail Blazers, who are in urgent need of shooters. This season, Portland ranks 24th in 3-point shooting percentage despite attempting the fifth-most shots from beyond the arc.
The Kings are reportedly contemplating options to shake things up. The Blazers, having witnessed ten of their games this season, have recognized the critical need for improved shooting to complement their fast-paced transition offense.
Among potential trade targets, Keon Ellis stands out. Ellis has consistently shot above 40 percent from three-point range in his NBA career and hit that mark last season during transition plays, exceeding the Blazers’ overall shooting by seven percentage points. In addition to his shooting prowess, Ellis is also an above-average defender, ranking fourth in the league for steal percentage (STL%) last year.
Ellis’s contract, which is just over $2.3 million, expires at the end of the season, making him an unrestricted free agent. This has prompted speculation that Sacramento might be willing to part with him for a minimal return, possibly even a low draft pick. Given the Blazers’ shooting struggles, they should prioritize acquiring Ellis, who could significantly bolster their offensive capabilities.
