Sean Monahan Nhl Trophy Ceremony

TORONTO, Canada – Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Monahan was honored with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in a heartfelt surprise from the widow of his late teammate, Meredith Gaudreau, on June 5, 2025. This award recognizes players who demonstrate perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Monahan dedicated this season to his best friend, Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically died in a car accident in August 2024. At his home outside Toronto, Monahan received the award from Gaudreau’s widow, who expressed how significant this moment was for both Sean and John. “You don’t hear John’s name without thinking of Sean and you don’t hear Sean’s name without thinking of John,” she said.

The touching surprise was planned with the help of Monahan’s wife, Brittany, who convinced him they were taking family photos. When Meredith presented the trophy, she said, “I just want to make sure he knows today is a good day. We are here to celebrate how amazing of a person you are.”

In the past season, Monahan scored 57 points in 54 games, showcasing his skills and leading the Blue Jackets while coping with the loss of his dear friend. “Winning that Bill Masterton Trophy means a lot to me,” Monahan stated, reflecting on the honor and the journey he has taken since Gaudreau’s passing.

Meredith detailed how important Monahan’s friendship was to Johnny, stating, “Sean persevered through one of the hardest things and you just lead by example. I know John is so proud of you.” Monahan’s performances helped the Blue Jackets improve, finishing just outside the playoff picture.

Monahan’s award comes with a $2,500 grant to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund from the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. Marc-Andre Fleury and Gabriel Landeskog were also finalists for the award, but it was Monahan’s story and resilience that stood out this year.

This win not only marks a significant milestone in Monahan’s career but also serves as a tribute to the bond he shared with Gaudreau. “There are a lot of special names on that trophy, and the meaning behind it is something I take great pride in,” he expressed as emotions ran high during the presentation.
