Severe Weather Sparks Flight Delays Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Unseasonably windy weather impacted celebrations ahead of St. Patrick’s Day this past Sunday, as a storm that was expected to deliver severe conditions moved south of the region.
Although the forecast had predicted damaging winds and heavy rain, the Philadelphia area experienced only scattered showers and gusty winds throughout the day. Many gathered for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which was able to conclude prior to the onset of heavier rain late Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service, strong winds were felt across the area, leading to significant operational disruptions at the Philadelphia International Airport. A ground delay was implemented from 5 p.m. to 7:59 p.m. ET, causing an average delay of 42 minutes for departing flights.
As of late Sunday, the airport reported 332 total flight delays and 21 cancellations due to the windy conditions. Local travelers expressed their frustrations, with many taking to NBC10 to share their experiences. “It’s frustrating, especially when you’re trying to get home after a long weekend,” said one passenger.
Power outages across the region were relatively limited, with PECO reporting 453 outages by 10:30 p.m. First Energy indicated approximately 221 outages, while PSEG and Atlantic City Electric reported 514 and 733 outages, respectively. Delmarva Power counted 82 outages, all concentrated in New Castle County.
“We’re monitoring the situation closely, and crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible,” said a PECO spokesperson. “Fortunately, the numbers are low in comparison to what we had anticipated.”
On Monday, the forecast suggests a return to clearer skies and milder temperatures, allowing for a sunnier St. Patrick’s Day on March 17.
