Small Plane Crashes in Simi Valley, Pilot Killed

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) — A small, single-engine plane crashed into two homes in Simi Valley on Saturday afternoon, killing the pilot.
The Ventura County Fire Department confirmed that the crash occurred around 2 p.m. in the 200 block of High Meadow Street, within the Wood Ranch neighborhood. Authorities believe the pilot was the only person onboard the aircraft.
Following the crash, a second-alarm fire ignited, damaging both homes. One house suffered significant roof damage, while the neighboring home experienced less destruction. Fortunately, both residences were occupied at the time, but no injuries were reported, according to the fire department.
Approximately 40 firefighters responded to the scene, quickly extinguishing the fire caused by the wreckage. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the pilot had been en route to Camarillo Airport from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster.
In a statement, the FAA noted, “A Vans RV-10 crashed near High Meadow Street and Wood Ranch Parkway in Simi Valley, California, around 2:10 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 3. The pilot was alone on board.” The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the accident.
Simi Valley Police Department Sgt. Chris Johnson confirmed that officers discovered the downed plane in the backyard of a residence shortly after the crash. Initial reports from emergency dispatch indicated that one or more structures were ablaze.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about aviation safety in residential areas. Officials are urging motorists to avoid the area as High Meadow Street remains closed for several hours due to the ongoing investigation.
The investigation is still in its early stages, and officials have not released further information about the pilot or the circumstances leading to the crash. Updates will be provided as more details emerge.
