INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Sophie Cunningham, guard for the Indiana Fever, will not play in the team’s regular season opener against the Chicago Sky on May 17 following an ankle injury.

The injury occurred during a preseason game against the Atlanta Dream on May 10. Cunningham rolled her ankle on the foot of Dream player Rhyne Howard while attempting to secure a rebound.

She exited the game in the third quarter and did not return. Although Cunningham avoided a serious injury, her participation in the opener remained uncertain as she did not practice earlier this week.

Head coach Stephanie White noted that the team would focus on Cunningham’s health for the entire season rather than rushing her back to the court. White stated, “We will take things day by day.”

On Friday afternoon, the Fever’s social media account posted a status report confirming that Cunningham would be out for the opener due to her right ankle injury.

Without Cunningham, the Fever will have to adjust their strategy. She is known for being a significant contributor on both offense and defense. The team’s decision to rest her aims to ensure she is fully healthy for later games in the season.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Fever performs without her on the court.
