Spain to Face Denmark in Crucial Nations League Clash
On Saturday, October 12, 2024, Estadio Enrique Roca de Murcia will host a pivotal UEFA Nations League encounter between Spain and Denmark. Spain, the current holders of the European championship, will seek to dethrone Denmark from the top of League A Group 4, where the Danish team currently leads with a perfect record from their first two matches.
Spain, who were crowned European champions after triumphing over England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final, started their Nations League campaign with a goalless draw against Serbia. They, however, bounced back to secure a victory over Switzerland despite being reduced to ten men early in the match. La Roja‘s victory against Switzerland extended their unbeaten streak to 12 matches across all competitions.
Ranked third globally by FIFA, Spain has demonstrated formidable offensive capabilities, having scored two or more goals in nine of their recent matches. Historically, Spain has dominated Denmark in head-to-head encounters, winning the last four meetings with a combined scoreline of 10-2.
Denmark, on their part, has impressed in the current campaign under caretaker manager Jan Knudsen following a disappointing Euro 2024 where they failed to win any match. The Danish team has claimed maximum points in their opening Nations League fixtures with victories over Switzerland and Serbia.
Despite their current form, Denmark faces a daunting task in Spain, having only triumphed twice against them in their last sixteen encounters, with the most recent victory coming over three decades ago in 1993. Denmark is currently ranked 20th by FIFA and aims to maintain their top spot in the group.
Both teams will head into the match with significant injuries. Spain will be without key players including Rodri, Unai Simon, and Ferran Torres, while Denmark will miss the services of Joachim Andersen and Christian Norgaard among others. However, the Spanish side is hopeful about their squad depth led by Dani Olmo and Alvaro Morata, and the recently returned Rasmus Hojlund bolsters Denmark’s attack.
