Spectrum Fiber Optic Network Vandalism Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – An up to $25,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for recent outages affecting Spectrum customers in Kansas City.

On Saturday evening, May 17, Spectrum announced that the outages across the Kansas City metro area were caused by severed fiber lines. A primary network fiber was cut due to a criminal act of vandalism, and a third-party fiber that typically provides backup services was also damaged.

According to a company spokesperson, “Our teams are working diligently to make necessary repairs and get customers back online as quickly as possible. In addition, our network engineers are working to identify possible rerouting solutions to expedite restoration.”

Reports indicate that after initially assessing the situation, Spectrum discovered that the problem was larger than previously identified. This is attributed to a combination of software issues alongside the damaged infrastructure.

The company plans to provide another update at 12:30 a.m. on the status of repairs and service restoration. Spectrum is encouraging anyone with information regarding the vandalism to report it to their tip line at 833-404-TIPS.

No further details about the investigation or the suspects have been released, prompting concern among customers affected by the disruption.
