Baltimore Spring Rain Equinox

BALTIMORE, Md. (AP) — Maryland residents are bracing for heavy rainfall as spring officially arrives today, March 20, 2025, marking the spring equinox.

According to meteorologists, the first day of spring will bring mostly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures, with highs expected to reach the mid to upper 60s. However, rain is likely to develop this afternoon, primarily after 2 p.m., and will continue into the evening, potentially impacting evening commutes.

Meteorologist Ava Marie reported, “The rain could be heavy at times with isolated thunder possible. Expect increased breeziness throughout the day with gusts reaching up to 25 mph.” By midday, temperatures are projected to hit around 60 degrees before escalating to just above 65 degrees in the late afternoon, which is markedly above the seasonal average.

Early today, temperatures hovered in the low 50s across Baltimore, BWI, and the Eastern Shore, with conditions feeling slightly chillier due to increasing winds. Residents are encouraged to prepare for colder weather starting tonight, as temperatures could drop into the 30s.

A cold front is expected to sweep across the region tonight, bringing even cooler temperatures tomorrow. While Friday may be clear, temperatures will only reach the mid-50s, accompanied by powerful gusts up to 40 mph that could make conditions feel even colder.

Looking ahead to the weekend, meteorologists forecast a chance of light showers on Saturday, though plenty of dry periods are expected. As spring progresses, below-average temperatures could lead to a cool start for many Maryland residents, according to the Climate Prediction Center.

“This spring equinox brings about equal lengths of day and night, leading to increased daylight hours in the coming weeks,” said Marie. “So while today might feel like a wash, brighter days are expected ahead.”
