PITTSBURGH, Pa. — As speculation grows surrounding his future, George Pickens enters the final year of his rookie contract following the recent trade for DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. With Metcalf signed to a five-year, $132 million deal, the Steelers’ financial flexibility to extend Pickens seems limited.

Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media at the NFL annual league meetings, stating Pickens’s role within the organization remains unchanged despite the heightened attention. “I don’t know that it affects him in any way,” Tomlin said. “The strength of the pack is the pack, and when you have eligibles that are schematic problems for those that defend you, it creates more opportunity for all involved.”

General Manager Omar Khan echoed Tomlin’s sentiments regarding Pickens. “No, you need more than one receiver in this league,” Khan stated. “We’re fortunate we have George and Calvin [Austin III] and we’re excited about what Roman [Wilson] is gonna do for us.”

The combination of Metcalf and Pickens poses a significant challenge for opposing defenses, yet the sustainability of this duo remains questionable. Tomlin humorously noted the distinctions between the two receivers, stating, “I don’t necessarily view them as similar. They’re both downfield capable, but they’re different people. DK [Metcalf] is a big man, ‘GP’ [George Pickens] is tall. There’s a difference.”

While the Cincinnati Bengals managed to extend both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, making a similar move for Pickens and Metcalf seems unlikely for Pittsburgh. Despite behavioral concerns, Pickens’s impressive statistics—2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons—make his potential departure a complicated matter for the franchise.

The Steelers invested significant resources in securing Metcalf, positioning him as the franchise’s leading receiver. However, the prospect of retaining Pickens long-term is becoming more complex, raising questions about the team’s strategy in building their receiving corps. It remains to be seen whether Pittsburgh will opt to extend Pickens or explore trade options before he reaches free agency.
