Tigres UANL Defeats Portland Thorns, Advances to W Champions Cup Final

MONTERREY, Mexico (May 21, 2025) – Tigres UANL defeated Portland Thorns FC 2-0 in the Concacaf W Champions Cup semifinal on Wednesday night, securing a spot in the championship match.
Aaliyah Farmer opened the scoring for Tigres in the 9th minute with a header off a corner kick taken by Jacqueline Ovalle. Just 18 minutes later, Thembi Kgatlana took advantage of a mistake by Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby, doubling the lead in the 27th minute.
Despite a challenging first half, Portland regrouped and dominated possession in the second half, but could not break through Tigres’ defense. The Thorns managed to keep up the pressure, registering 19 shots throughout the match, but seven were on target, all saving efforts made by Tigres goalkeeper Itzel González.
“We made adjustments at halftime, but the ball just wouldn’t go in for us,” said Thorns coach Rob Gale. “The effort was there, but we have to convert opportunities into goals.”
Portland will now shift focus to the third-place match against Club América on Saturday, May 24, at Estadio Universitario. This matchup is crucial for the Thorns as they look to secure a positive result after their semifinal setback.
The upcoming match is scheduled to kick off at 4 PM PT and will be available for streaming on Paramount+, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+.
Tigres will face Gotham FC in the final after Gotham defeated Club América 3-1 in the earlier semifinal. Tigres UANL seeks to add another trophy to their collection, while Portland hopes to recover and finish the tournament on a high note.
