2024 World Wide Technology Championship Golfers At El Cardonal

The 2024 World Wide Technology Championship is underway at the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal course in Los Cabos, Mexico, with Tom Whitney, Kevin Streelman, and Rico Hoey tied for the lead after the first round. Each of these golfers shot a 5-under 67 in challenging windy conditions.

Whitney, who has never won on the PGA Tour and has no top-10 finishes in 2024, birdied the first three holes to set the pace. Streelman, a 46-year-old who last won on the PGA Tour in 2014, started his round with an eagle and a birdie. Hoey also navigated the windy conditions effectively, highlighting the difficulty of the course.

Defending champion Erik van Rooyen is just one stroke back at 4-under 68, along with several other players including Taylor Montgomery, Max Greyserman, Nate Lashley, Austin Eckroat, Kelly Kraft, and Ryan McCormick. Van Rooyen noted that the conditions this year are significantly different from last year, with much stronger winds.

The second round of the tournament will continue on Friday, with TV coverage available on Golf Channel starting at 2 p.m. ET. Fans can also stream the event via NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports App with an active cable subscription.

The tournament features a $7.2 million purse, with the winner set to receive $1.296 million and 500 FedEx Cup points, along with a two-year PGA Tour exemption. This event is crucial for players looking to improve their standings in the FedEx Cup Fall events.

Notably, Taylor Montgomery had an unusual caddie for part of his round; after his father had to bow out due to health issues, former Major League Baseball star Larry Walker took over the bag. Montgomery is seeking a strong performance to improve his position in the FedEx Cup standings.
