Utah NHL Team Reveals Name: Utah Mammoth

Salt Lake City, Utah – After a 13-month process involving extensive fan feedback, Utah’s NHL team officially announced its name as the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday. The name pays homage to the iconic mammoths that roamed the region over 10,000 years ago, symbolizing strength and community.

Owners Ryan and Ashley Smith emphasized the significance of community involvement in the naming process, which included four rounds of voting and over 850,000 total votes. “We couldn’t be more excited to launch the official name and marks for Utah’s NHL hockey team,” said Ashley Smith. “The community chose the Utah Mammoth brand, and it stands as a symbol of who we are, where we came from, and the unstoppable force we’re building together.”

The team’s primary logo features the Mountain Mammoth mid-charge with tusks lifted, crowned by the Wasatch Mountain Range. The logo also incorporates the outline of Utah, reinforcing the franchise’s connection to its home state.

In addition to the primary logo, the team has developed secondary logos that include the word “UTAH” with the mammoth tusk creatively integrated into the “U”. The color scheme includes Rock Black, Mountain Blue, and Salt White, reflecting the state’s natural scenery.

The team’s inaugural season began under the name Utah Hockey Club following the NHL’s franchise establishment in Utah on April 18, 2024, with the acquisition of the Arizona Coyotes‘ assets. The updated branding also includes new uniforms that feature the Mountain Mammoth logo prominently.

Ryan Smith highlighted the historical significance of mammoths in Utah, noting that fossils have been found across the state, some containing preserved DNA. The mammoth identity resonates deeply with local fans. “From day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah,” he said.

The team is set to participate in the 2025 NHL Draft, holding the No. 4 pick after moving up 10 spots in the lottery on Monday. Jerseys featuring the new branding will be available for fans ahead of the upcoming season.
