WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Wizards have signed forward Justin Champagnie to a four-year, $10 million contract, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania on Sunday. This deal solidifies the 23-year-old’s role with the team after a strong performance on a two-way contract this season.

Champagnie, who averages 7.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 0.9 steals per game, has emerged as a key contributor since joining the Wizards via a 10-day contract in February 2024. Over the course of 40 games, he has demonstrated effective scoring abilities, shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range.

In addition to his regular season contributions, Champagnie showcased his talent during the G League Next Up Game at the All-Star Weekend, where he received the second-highest fan votes, trailing only Yuki Kawamura of the Memphis Hustle.

Champagnie played his rookie season with the Toronto Raptors, participating in 39 games before transitioning to Washington. His standout performance occurred in a December 28 game against the New York Knicks, where he scored a career-high 31 points alongside 10 rebounds and two steals in an overtime loss.

As part of the new contract, Champagnie will receive $1.8 million for the remaining six weeks of the 2024-25 season. With the Wizards holding the league’s worst record at 11-48, the organization is taking an opportunity to evaluate emerging talents like Champagnie.

“This seems like a savvy move for all parties involved,” noted an NBA insider following the announcement. The commitment to Champagnie indicates the Wizards’ strategy of fostering young talent during a difficult season.

Champagnie, who is regarded as an experienced player despite his youth, is now seen as a mentor figure for rookies like Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, and Kyshawn George. His new deal promises ample playing time and further development in a franchise eager to rebuild.
