New York Yankees Vs Cleveland Guardians Alcs

The New York Yankees are set to present a revised lineup as they face the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday. Manager Aaron Boone has elected to make changes in both the first baseman and catcher positions, as the Yankees aim to extend their lead, which currently stands at 2-0 in the series.

Boone has confirmed that Anthony Rizzo will be absent from the starting lineup due to his ongoing recovery from two fractured fingers on his right hand, an injury he sustained on September 28. Although Rizzo returned to the field for the ALCS and delivered a performance of 3-for-8 with a walk in the first two games, Boone cited the necessity to be cautious with his condition. Therefore, John Berti is set to take the first base position. “Just loved how he looked in the division series. Love the dynamic he brings to the table,” Boone commented, acknowledging Berti’s contributions during the ALDS despite his inexperience at first base.

Another change sees Austin Wells being rested following a downturn in form over recent weeks. Despite a promising start to his season, Wells has struggled since September, batting just .104 with a .369 OPS in 109 plate appearances. Boone expressed continued confidence in Wells’ abilities, stating, “I think he’s locked in and has obviously struggled a little, but I really don’t think he’s feeling that, necessarily.” José Trevino will replace Wells behind the plate, with Boone noting Trevino’s importance to the team and his past All-Star recognition.

The Yankees will be facing Cleveland’s left-handed starting pitcher, Logan Allen, marking the first lefty they have encountered in this postseason. Boone remarked on the significance of facing a left-handed pitcher, stating, “They’ve got a lefty going,” as a factor contributing to his lineup decisions. Trevino’s right-handed batting provides a strategic advantage against Cleveland’s southpaw.

Overall, these adjustments are part of Boone’s strategic adaptation, as the Yankees endeavor to secure a significant advantage in the series. A win would place the Yankees in a favorable position historically, as teams with a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven format have gone on to win the series approximately 85% of the time.
