Yankees Lose to Red Sox, Highlighting Injuries and Defensive Struggles

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees fell to the Boston Red Sox 10-7 on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium, struggling with key injuries and defensive errors that cost them the game. The loss evened the weekend series at one game apiece.
Trevor Story led the Red Sox, driving in five runs with a three-run double in a pivotal third inning, followed by a two-run single in the ninth. Yankees starter Ryan Yarbrough had a tough outing, allowing eight runs over four innings, which raised his ERA from 2.83 to 4.17.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted that the team needed to improve its infield depth, especially with injuries sidelining Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe. “We need someone who can play more often if needed,” Boone said.
In a critical moment during the third inning, Romy Gonzalez hit a grounder to shortstop Oswald Peraza, who threw to third base where Pablo Reyes was unable to make the play. The miscommunication allowed the Red Sox to load the bases, leading to Story’s three-run double.
Giancarlo Stanton is expected to return soon, which could shift the lineup, but Reyes’ performance has raised questions about his future with the team. He has only had 28 plate appearances this season and has struggled both offensively and defensively.
Despite Yarbrough’s struggles, the Yankees briefly closed the gap in the eighth inning with a two-run single from DJ LeMahieu, making it 8-7. However, reliever Ian Hamilton allowed two more runs in the ninth, sealing their defeat.
Looking ahead, the Yankees are considering adding another starter to bolster their rotation. Currently, they rely heavily on Max Fried and Carlos Rodón, but the pressure on the pitching staff continues to mount as the season progresses.
The Yankees will try to bounce back on Sunday as they face the Red Sox once again, with hopes of turning their luck around.
