Browns Prepare for Quarterback Competition Ahead of 2025 Season

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As the Cleveland Browns gear up for the 2025 NFL season, they are set to hold a quarterback competition featuring several notable players. With the offseason underway, the broad range of quarterbacks will be vying for the starting position amidst a backdrop of uncertainty in the team’s depth chart.
The Browns are entering a four-way battle to determine their starting quarterback, a competition that is essential given their challenging early-season schedule. Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated that the team has no immediate plans to trade any of their quarterbacks, despite interest from other teams.
Among the standout quarterbacks on the roster are Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, both of whom bring unique advantages to the table. Flacco, with vast experience in the NFL and a winning record last season, poses a significant threat to Pickett, who hopes to secure the starting role. Pickett is expected to take the initial first-team reps during organized team activities beginning May 28.
The Browns also recently drafted quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders, who boasts impressive collegiate statistics, is determined to climb the depth chart and make an impact.
Additionally, Dillon Gabriel, another rookie quarterback, is making his case to be part of the rotation. Gabriel’s performance in minicamp has raised expectations, further complicating the team’s decision as they get closer to Aug. 27, when roster cutdown day arrives.
ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi suggested that with the uncertainty surrounding the team’s quarterback depth, there is a chance Sanders might start during the season, considering the previous struggles the franchise has had with consistency at the position.
As the team prepares to kick off their preseason schedule on Aug. 8, all eyes will be on how the competition shakes out and which quarterback emerges as the leader heading into the regular season.
