Arthur Fils Withdraws, No French Players Left in Roland-Garros

PARIS, France — Arthur Fils has withdrawn from the Roland-Garros tournament due to an injury, leaving no French players in the men’s draw. The announcement came from the French Tennis Federation (FFT) on Friday evening.
Fils, ranked 14th in the world, was scheduled to face Russian player Andrey Rublev in the third round on Saturday. However, the FFT’s statement cited a lingering injury as the reason for his withdrawal, without providing further details.
Although Fils had won his previous match against Spain’s Jaume Munar, he struggled significantly in the later stages of the match, which raised concerns about his physical condition. After the match, he expressed uncertainty on whether he would be able to compete further in the tournament, stating, “I hope to continue, but we’ll see how I recover.”
On Instagram, Fils expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s with sadness that I withdraw from this tournament that I love. This decision was hard but necessary after medical advice.”
Fils’ exit marks a disappointing turn for French tennis at this year’s Grand Slam, as he had managed to win a round after two previous early losses in 2023 and 2024. Following his defeat, Quentin Halys was the only other French player left, but he lost to Denmark’s Holger Rune, officially eliminating France from the competition.
As the tournament continues, the absence of French players is becoming a highlighted topic among fans and commentators, showcasing the challenges faced by local athletes in this prestigious event.
