Lightning Risk Prompts Safety Warnings for Brooklyn and Staten Island Residents

Brooklyn, NY — The National Weather Service issued a warning for Brooklyn and Staten Island due to a storm moving through the area. The storm has now moved out, and the warning will soon expire.
Lightning strikes the United States approximately 25 million times each year, with most occurrences happening during the summer. Unfortunately, about 20 people lose their lives to lightning annually, according to the weather service.
The danger from lightning increases as thunderstorms approach, peaking when the storm is overhead and diminishing as it moves away.
To remain safe during thunderstorms, people are encouraged to follow a lightning safety plan. If indoors, stay inside until the storm passes. For those without access to indoor shelter, certain measures can enhance safety.
When outdoors during a thunderstorm, individuals should seek low ground, avoid metal objects, and stay away from tall structures. In addition, they should listen for weather updates and be prepared to move quickly to safety.
Heavy rain can make roads hazardous. Residents are advised to stay informed and consider these tips during heavy rainfall: be cautious of swollen waterways, maintain safe driving distances, and reduce speed to avoid skidding.
Drivers should also be mindful of visibility by turning on headlights and giving plenty of space to large vehicles, which can obscure sightlines with water spray.
The first half-hour of rainfall is especially critical, as roads can become slick due to a mix of rain and oil. It’s essential to exercise increased caution during this time.
When heavy rain results in limited visibility, drivers are advised to pull over in safe locations until conditions improve. Keeping headlights on and using emergency flashers can alert other drivers to their presence.
Taking these precautions can help ensure safety during storms. Stay alert and adhere to local weather advisories for the best protection.
