Lakers Surprise Blazers Despite Missing Stars, Led by Nick Smith Jr.
PORTLAND, Oregon — The Los Angeles Lakers achieved a remarkable victory on Monday night, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers 123-115 despite missing their top three scorers. With LeBron James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves sidelined due to injuries, the Lakers relied on their depth and teamwork to secure their fourth consecutive win, improving their record to 6-2.
Reserve guard Nick Smith Jr. emerged as an unexpected star, scoring 25 points in just 27 minutes off the bench. His performance included five three-pointers and 17 points in the second half, helping the Lakers rally from a nine-point deficit.
Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed his confidence in the team prior to the game, stating, “We have enough in this locker room to win this game.” His belief in the players shone through as the team rallied and secured the win.
The Lakers initially entered the game as 3.5-point favorites but turned into 10.5-point underdogs after news of the injuries to key players. Additionally, James is still recovering from sciatica, leaving the team shorthanded.
Deandre Ayton added 29 points and 10 rebounds, while Rui Hachimura contributed 28 points to the effort. Ayton praised the younger players for stepping up, particularly Smith and Jake LaRavia, embracing the “next man up” mentality that has become crucial to the Lakers’ early-season success.
Smith, only in his third NBA season and recently signed to a two-way contract after being waived by the Charlotte Hornets, was grateful for the opportunity. He said, “Just coming together as a group, getting a big win, especially with our best players out… this is big for us.”
This win signifies that the Lakers have had six different players score at least 25 points in their first eight games, a record previously set by the 1971-72 championship Lakers. This early season success reflects a deep roster ready to compete amidst challenges.
As for Smith, he noted the importance of building confidence: “It means a lot, man. I’m blessed to be in this position.” The Lakers will return home to face the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, eager to continue their winning streak.
