Jake Fromm Praises Gunner Stockton Ahead of Key Game
ATHENS, Ga. — Former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm is excited about the potential of current Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton. With growing confidence in Georgia’s football team, Fromm expressed favorable views on Stockton’s performance during a recent interview.
“Watch out for Gunner Stockton,” Fromm said. “He’s playing some really good football right now, and he can take this team wherever it wants to go.” The Bulldogs, currently ranked No. 5, are counting on Stockton as they prepare to face Mississippi State on Saturday at noon.
Stockton will be matched against senior quarterback Blake Shapen, who has had a solid season for Mississippi State. Shapen has 2,148 passing yards, placing him fourth in the SEC, while Stockton has accumulated 1,776 yards with a 12-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Stockton has been more efficient overall, having been sacked only ten times while Shapen has faced 29 sacks.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has emphasized the importance of starting quickly against explosive teams like Mississippi State, which leads the SEC with 16 passing plays of 40 yards or more. Fromm recalled the Bulldogs’ ability to score early in their recent win over Florida. “I loved starting fast and scoring on the first drive of the game,” said Fromm, who had a successful career at Georgia from 2017-2019.
Past games have shown that Georgia can come back from deficits, winning eight of their last nine SEC games despite trailing in them. Fromm noted the resilience of the team when faced with adversity, which he believes is crucial as they look toward the playoff season. “It’s so important for this team… they find a way to win,” he added.
On the subject of Stockton’s development, Fromm mentioned noticeable improvements and maturity in the quarterback’s game: “He looks so much more comfortable out there. And him just seeming to have fun… that’s showing the makings of a guy who is figuring it out.”
