Baku Metro Wi-Fi Implementation Continues to Stall Amid Upgrades

BAKU, Azerbaijan — As public transportation evolves globally, internet access has become a critical component, yet the Baku metro continues to lag behind. Despite discussions about implementing Wi-Fi throughout the system, no concrete plans have been finalized.
Metro systems in cities like Moscow, Seoul, and Beijing have successfully integrated comprehensive Wi-Fi networks for passengers. In contrast, cities such as New York, London, and Toronto provide limited connectivity primarily in stations. Baku Metro’s situation has become a recurring topic, with no resolution in sight.
Currently, extensive repair and restoration efforts are underway in various metro stations across Baku. These upgrades have reignited conversations about the technological modernization of the metro system.
In response to inquiries from Metbuat.az, Baku Metro CJSC officials indicated that the decision to implement a Wi-Fi network will follow a detailed assessment of the system’s technical capabilities, infrastructure condition, and other crucial factors.
This ongoing lack of decision-making has frustrated residents and commuters who expect the same conveniences that many other major cities offer. “Reliable internet access is essential for today’s commuters,” said a frequent metro user. “It shouldn’t just be a luxury; it’s a necessity.”
Without a timeline for when Wi-Fi could be available, commuters remain uncertain about whether Baku’s metro system will catch up to its international counterparts in the digital age.
