UK Braces for Heavy Snowfall as Met Office Issues Yellow Warning
The United Kingdom is preparing for heavy snowfall later this week as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning. The warning covers various regions including the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney, Argyll and Bute, central Scotland, Shetland, Wales, northern and central England, as well as Northern Ireland.
According to forecasters, a band of heavy snow could potentially disrupt daily life, with up to 25cm of snowfall expected in some areas. As temperatures drop over the course of the week, a yellow snow warning has been put in place for parts of Wales, northern and central England, as well as Northern Ireland.
The Met Office advises that the band of snow, initially accompanied by rain and sleet, will move north on Thursday. Lower-level areas may experience up to 2cm of snow, while locations above 200m could see 2-5cm, and higher areas above 400m may accumulate as much as 10-20cm. The impact of this snowfall is expected to gradually transition to sleet and rain from the south later on.
While the weather pattern brings cold air from the north, mild air from the south is continuously pushing into the region, creating ideal conditions for frost and snow. As a result, further warnings for ice may be issued later in the week as temperatures drop below average for this time of year.
