The British Army is opening its doors to Commonwealth citizens, including those from Nigeria, starting today, August 19, 2024. This recruitment drive will run until August 26, 2024, and specific roles available include musicians, engineers, and paratroopers.

This phase of recruitment highlights the essential contributions that Commonwealth soldiers have made to the British Army over the years. It’s important for applicants to have a referral from a British Army member, except for those applying for musician roles.

For musicians, there are specific musical standards that must be met. Details about these standards can be found on the British Army’s website. As part of the recruitment process, all applicants will undergo medical screenings, particularly focusing on sickle cell traits, which are common in various populations, including those from Commonwealth countries.

Having the sickle cell trait does not automatically disqualify candidates, but those flagged as higher risk will need to take a diagnostic blood test before they can participate in fitness assessments. This step ensures the safety of all recruits during their training.

Fitness is a big part of joining the Army, and applicants must complete several tests, including the Beep Test and the Seated Ball Throw. The Army encourages future recruits to maintain a healthy lifestyle and provides tips to help them prepare.

When it comes to personal appearance, tattoos are allowed under certain guidelines. They must not be offensive or visible in a passport photo. While tattoos on hands and necks are permitted, those on the face or head are not. Large piercings that change a person’s appearance might disqualify applicants, and all jewellery must be taken off during physical tests.

The British Army has a supportive approach towards criminal convictions. If any convictions are ‘spent’ after a certain period, they might not need to be disclosed. However, being honest about unspent convictions is crucial as failing to do so could lead to serious consequences later on.

For youths who are not yet eligible to join the Army, the Army Cadet Force offers a great way to get involved. Participants can take part in military-themed activities, sports, and outdoor adventures while earning qualifications and developing skills.

Interested candidates must apply between August 19 and August 26, 2024. Those wishing to continue the recruitment process will need to travel to the UK for assessments in October and November 2024, with training starting in early 2025.
