Buccaneers Re-Sign Backup Quarterback Kyle Trask

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed backup quarterback Kyle Trask to a one-year deal worth $2.787 million, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media on March 12, 2025. This agreement keeps Trask in the fold as the team’s backup to starting quarterback Baker Mayfield for the upcoming season.
Trask, a 27-year-old former second-round pick from the University of Florida, was originally drafted by the Buccaneers in 2021. Throughout his four-year career in the NFL, he has seen limited action, participating in only seven games and completing 4 of 11 passes for a total of 28 yards.
Despite the opportunity to explore free agency, Trask chose to continue his career in Tampa Bay, where he will aim to gain further experience under Mayfield. “I like Trask,” Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. “I think he’s a good football player. He just came behind Brady and now Baker. It’s just kind of tough to get on the field.”
Prior to re-signing Trask, the Buccaneers only had two quarterbacks on their roster: Mayfield and Michael Pratt, a former standout at Tulane University. Pratt, who was on the practice squad for much of the last season, will also be vying for a more prominent role.
Bowles expressed optimism about Pratt’s potential, noting, “Pratt, we think he’s very talented. When we got him, he didn’t really have a chance to get the system down, because he was playing scout team all the time. You can’t really get those plays in.”
The decision to bring Trask back as the backup will not only maintain continuity but also provide essential knowledge of the offensive system. Despite Mayfield’s history of resilience, throwing his body around on the field, Trask’s familiarity with the team’s operations could prove invaluable should the starter be sidelined.
Last season, Mayfield missed only a few plays and never a start, which limited Trask’s opportunities to step onto the field in meaningful situations. The upcoming offseason will now see both Trask and Pratt receive more chances to prove themselves in practice.
As the quarterback landscape in the NFL becomes increasingly competitive, it remains to be seen how Trask will develop within the Buccaneers’ system and if he can finally carve out a more significant role.
