Nick Castellanos Hitting Baseball 2025 Season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Nick Castellanos is off to a strong start in the 2025 MLB season, demonstrating notable improvements at the plate after a challenging previous year. Following a disappointing 2024 season where he struggled with his chase rate, Castellanos appears to have adopted a more disciplined approach, leading to early successes.

In the past, the Philadelphia Phillies emphasized the importance of cutting down on chasing pitches outside the zone during spring training. This message was particularly crucial for Castellanos, who faced scrutiny after a lackluster performance in the 2024 season that concluded with an NLCS exit. Early statistics from this season show promise, highlighting his adjustments in pitch selection.

Last year, Castellanos’ batting numbers plummeted in the early part of the season, posting a batting average of .199 with a 22.9% strikeout rate before May 28. However, once he began to chase more pitches, surprisingly, his productivity increased, culminating in a significant improvement in his second-half numbers: .283 average and a reduced strikeout rate of 20.4%.

“He seemed to find a rhythm where he was swinging more at pitches that he could drive,” said a Phillies hitting coach. “It’s about finding that balance between discipline and aggression.”

This season, Castellanos appears to have merged his previous approaches, as his early metrics indicate a lower chase rate compared to the past. With just 25 plate appearances so far this season, Castellanos has already collected four walks, highlighting a newfound patience at the plate.

During a recent game against the Colorado Rockies, Castellanos showcased this shift in approach. In a critical at-bat against pitcher Antonio Senzatela, he laid off a slider that had historically troubled him, signaling a positive development in his pitch selection.

Castellanos’ ability to lay off pitches that have been his “kryptonite” suggests a level of awareness and adaptation. Historically, he would often swing at such offerings, leading to untimely strikeouts. As he continues to face similar pitches, the question remains whether he can maintain this improved approach throughout the remainder of the season.

Further statistics show that while he had a BABIP (Batting Average on Balls In Play) of .235 early last season, it improved to .325 in the latter half. This season, while it’s still too early to draw definitive conclusions, there is optimism around Castellanos’ current trajectory.

“He is recognizing his weaknesses, which is the first step towards improvement,” said a former MLB player. “If he can keep this mindset, it’s going to lead to a solid year.”

Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Castellanos can sustain this new approach as the season progresses. His ability to adjust could be a crucial factor not only for his own performance but also for the Phillies’ success in the highly competitive National League.
