Renowned British artist Charli XCX is preparing for the release of her Brat remix album on October 11, taking this opportunity to reveal the uncertainties she faced when releasing the track “Girl, So Confusing”. The song, which features a remix by New Zealand singer Lorde, has a backstory that Charli recently discussed in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music.

According to Charli XCX, the song “Girl, So Confusing” was a nerve-wracking release due to its links with Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor. Charli expressed to Lowe that she was concerned Lorde might “never speak to me again” after hearing the song. “I was ready for her to never speak to me again. That could have been an outcome,” Charli confessed, noting how time zone differences disrupted her initial plan to share the track with Lorde before it went public.

Despite her worries, Lorde had already listened to the song before Charli reached out. The two artists soon exchanged voice notes, which sparked the idea for a remix collaboration. Charli recounted, “She was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if I did this response?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, my God. I can’t believe this is happening. Yes.'” This interaction led to Lorde contributing her verse to the remix within just a few days.

Charli further shared her insecurities regarding the song and their professional relationship, mentioning in a previous interview with Rolling Stone her feelings of jealousy towards Lorde’s early success with the hit “Royals“. “I was super jealous of the success that [Royals] got, and that Ella got,” Charli admitted.

The Brat remix album will feature other collaborations alongside the Lorde remix, including remixes with Addison Rae, Troye Sivan, and The 1975, among others. Charli and Lorde recently took the stage together in New York to perform the remix live, demonstrating the artistic synergy they have forged from this experience.
